Heel-high-jinx in Puss in Boots
"Puss in Boots" prances along on three basic truths. One, cats are funny. Two, vain Spanish cats in high-heeled musketeer boots are even funnier. Last, booted, vain Spanish cats voiced by a breathy Antonio Banderas are flat-out hilarious.
This 3-D prequel to the DreamWorks Shrek franchise is an amusing kick in the pantaloons, at least when it's focused on the swashbuckling feline we've come to know and love. The plot is derivative, the villains annoying, the ending visible for miles. But when Puss is front and centre, flopping his feathered hat, extending his blade with a rakish swoop, it's an entertaining bit of shorthaired fluff.
The story begins with Puss in search of loot. He learns that outlaws Jack and Jill (voiced by Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris) have in their possession magic beans that will lead them to a castle in the sky and the proverbial goose that lays the golden eggs.
Puss wants those eggs. But in his quest to steal the beans he meets some competition in the form of Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek), a mysterious cat burglar who isn't all that mysterious to anyone familiar with "To Catch a Thief," "The Return of the Pink Panther" or the trailer. The plot also introduces us to a whining Humpty Alexander Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis), a massive egg with major issues. You won't like him. Why Puss puts up with him is one of the movie's biggest puzzles, certainly harder to guess than every single bend in the narrative.
"Puss in Boots" was directed by Chris Miller, who co-directed the psychologically complicated "Shrek the Third," but the preoccupation with deep-set emotional wounds is feeling a little stale. A flashback to Puss and Humpty's orphanage days goes on and on and on.
All in all, the 3-D animations wow without gimmickry and it's a cheerful movie for the kids to enjoy.
